Poisonings
A poison is an agent that is capable of causing harm to a living organism.
Almost any substance can act as a poison, if a sufficiently large dose is
absorbed into the body. Poisoning is an important public health problem, as
a large number of people are injured or die each year as a result of exposure
to industrial and natural poisons. Many unintentional poisonings result
from lack of knowledge about risks of excessive exposure and from carelessness.
Many of these poisonings can be avoided or prevented through information and
education.
We track unintentional poisonings due to the following exposures: carbon monoxide and lead among children.
